Hornet Guys Bowling Matches 2010-2011

Archives | 2008 - 2009 | 2009 -2010 | 2010 - 2011 |

1/12/2011 Monroe vs. Lakota East

The big 3 bowled solid games as the Hornets defeated Lakota East 2655 – 2574. Cody Neace (203 – 209 = 412) found the 400 plateau again for the 1st time in several matches. Fellow southpaw Christian Vollmer was close on his heals with a 202 – 200 = 402 series. The 200 game was a rare clean game for Christian. David Sorrell is getting close in his quest to become the 1st member to shot over 500 for a 2-game series with scores of 244 – 232 = 476 series. The Hornets had solid games of 962 and 934. It was also nice to see 3 of the 4 baker games with solid performances 196, 193, and 201. (13th 200 baker this year)
In JV Action Jamie Ridenour shot a 169, Justin Montoya had a 176 – 157 = 333 series, and Adam (I like my new ball) Forkner through a 203 – 189 = 392 series.
Record 4 Wins – 4 Losses

1/4/2011 Monroe vs. Princeton

The guys traveled to Princeton to take on the Viking at their home of Princeton bowl. It was quite an experience for some of our guys. The lane conditions were not to their liking. Ken Hummons had our 3rd highest game with a 158 and he followed it up with a 154 to have the 2nd highest series of the night with a 312. David Sorrell continued his streak of matches with a game of 200 or better with the high score for the night of exactly 200. Jamie Ridenour had a respectable game of 173. Christian Vollmer even found the pocket in the 1st game with a 194. But a 748 2nd game and a lot of missed spares sent the Hornets to their 4th defeat of the season.

The JV team won their match against Princeton 1944 – 1860. Adam Forkner 154, Cody Timming 153, pat McIntosh 177, Cody Myers 159 were the only scores above 150 for the night. The team did shoot a 178 Baker game to help propel them to victory.
Record: 3 Wins – 4 Losses

12/28/2010 Monroe’s New Year’s Tournament Eastern Lanes

Wow, Ok. I was hoping we would turn things around at this tournament for all of our guys. But I didn’t expect this at all. It was a record setting day on many levels for us. Our varsity team, (or again I sometimes refer to our teams as Team A, Team B, and Team C) bowled extremely well. Coming into this year we had only 4 team games above 1000 pins. Our A team just bowled 3 straight 1000+ games. (1008-1056-1035 = 3099) Our B team bowled a 944 first game! That put them in the top 10 scores of our 1st 2 years of bowling. We just averaged 206.6 for our individual games. We are definitely on the right track this year as far as our individuals go. But our 183 average in Bakers has got to come up to match our individual games. This was also the first time that we have placed in an official Tournament. Yes we are excited about that. Even though we were 3rd we are proving to people that we hang with the big teams. We lost to Franklin (State Team in 2010) and Middletown (Finished 6th and 7th at Districts the past 2 years) we were able to out bowl other powerhouse teams like Roger Bacon, Elder, Lebanon, Northwest, LaSalle, and St. Xavier. All of whom have been to districts the past 2 years.

Scores in our record setting day are as follows:

Team A

  • Alex Lawson 226 – 180 = 406 2-game series
  • Dan Surfus 180 – 209 – 177 = 566 series
  • Cody Neace 205 – 192 – 205 = 602 series
  • Christian Vollmer 212 – 231 – 237 = 680 series 5th Place All – Tournament Team
  • David Sorrell 185 – 244 – 249 = 678 series 6th Place Overall

B Team

  • Adam Forkner 209 – 182 – 200 = 591 series finished 2nd in the JV All - Tournament Team

Justin Montoya bowled a 234 and a personal best series of 542 while Matt Kakaris helped with a 197 game and Jamie Ridenour with a 194 game in this record setting day. This was also the 1st time that we had a JV Team place in a JV tournament as the team came in 2nd place to the Middies while edging out LaSalle and Dayton Carroll for the top spots.

Not to be out done our C team set some records as well. Teddy Milburn shot 50 pins above his average for 2 games and 40 pins above his average in the 3rd game as his new series high is a 419. Cody Timing shot his 1st ever 500 series with a 155 – 157 – 197 set of games. Zach Dean also bowled his 1st ever 400 series (423) when he almost had a clean game of a 173 in the 2nd set. Our Team of Teddy, Zach, Cody, Cody Myers and Glen Ayes shot 2 Baker Games of 200 or better.

12/15/2010 Monroe vs. Middletown Eastern Lanes

We came in ready to bowl against the Middies. It has always been a tough match for the guys and it is definitely not one that everyone takes lightly. But they were just too tough in the Baker games for us to overcome. Middletown shot a 1065 to our 1052 first game as things were real close in the beginning. We shot a respectable 979 2nd game for a 2031 10 game series. It amazes me that we can shoot a 203 pin average for 10 games but we don’t seem to put a Baker game together over 200 most of the time.
David Sorrell led the way with a 267 – 219 = 486 series for the Hornets. Cody Neace rolled a 235 – 197 = 432 series to back him up. Dan Surfus was able to pitch in with another 203 game as well. Next match is the Monroe tournament over the break. Our JV team bowled well with some individual scores of 162 by Adam Forkner and a personal best 302 series by Jonas Hellberg with a 153 – 149 individual games. Hornet record is now 3 Wins and 3 Losses.

12/11/2010 Holiday Tournament Western Bowl

This was one of those days that we should have just stayed in bed and dealt with things. People were sluggish and we just didn’t get out to the start that we would have liked. Our high individual team game was only in the mid 800’s. Matter of fact it was 3 of our 4 lowest team games all year. But there were still some bright spots. Christian Vollmer continues to show that he likes bowling 3 individual games as he bowled his 2nd ever career 600+ series. His scores were a 235 – 195 – 176 for a 604. David Sorrell is continuing to show his dominance over the lanes with a 194 – 222 – 205 = 621 series. The Baker games were not any better with only 1 game over 200.

12/7/2010 Springfield Catholic Central Shamrock Lanes

We were able to take a long Bus ride up to Springfield today From Monroe. Trip went smoothly except for the constant beeping sound on the bus. We arrived at Shamrock Lanes. Last year we were able to win here by about 100 pins overall. Was hoping our guys were on today. During warm-ups it took us awhile to figure out our patterns. Our Lefties had about 8 boards to work with as long as they were smooth. Righties had about 5 boards of play around 8-12. We did spend quite a bit of time with lanes 3-4 broken down. David Sorrell and Dan Surfus did a great job of being patient. The guys ended up bowling really well. Dan Surfus (200 – 177 = 377 series), Alex Lawson ( 268 – 183 = 451 series), Cody Neace ( 237 – 230 = 467 series) Christian Vollmer (210 – 178 = 388 series) and David Sorrell (221 – 187 = 408 series). This actually turned out to be a great night for our guys. The 1st game Series is our 2nd highest ever in Monroe History with an 1136. We put in the next group of guys in to bowl the baker games and the kept up the pace by setting a new Monroe Baker game record of 268 by the team of Ken Hummons, Matt, Kakaris, Justin Montoya, Jamie Ridenour, and Cody Neace. We enjoyed a dinner at A and W Root Beer on the way home. Record 3 Wins and 2 Losses

12/4/2010 Big Blue Tournament Columbia Lanes

7:00 was early for this one. It’s our 1st tournament of the year. Looking forward to seeing how everyone handles the noise and the surroundings of 22 teams. The guys bowled pretty well. Our lefties stuck together and really worked the lanes to their benefit. Cody Neace bowled a 224 – 202 – 231 for a 657 series placing just out of the top 5 for the tournament. Christian Vollmer had a 211 – 203 – 204 for a 618 series. This was Christian’s 1st ever 600+ series in high school. David Sorrell rolled a 226 to go with his 584 series for the day. For the day we bowled a 939 – 959 – 884 for a 2782 match before bakers. Bakers didn’t go very well but we were able to scratch out 1 game of 231 to finish the tournament with 3798 pins.
Our 2nd and 3rd Teams were able to get some good experience and playing time as they continue to improve their games. Matt Kakaris rolled a 194 high game and a 519 series, Justin Montoya bowled a 438 series, and Glen Ayes rolled a new high 176 with his 418 series. Adam Forkner rolled a 183 with his 432 series. Jonas Hellberg rolled a 171 with his 396 series. Cody Timming rolled a 174 with his 379 series. Zach Dean is getting the hang of this game as he bowled 147 106 and a 130 for a 383. 1st time he has ever broken a 100 3 straight times. Congrats Zach. The rest of the team did as well with Pat McIntosh 289 series, Cody Myers 364 Series, and Teddy Milburn with a 270 series.

12/1/2010 West Carrollton Eastern Lanes

This is the 3rd Match in a row after our Thanksgiving Break. We Outlasted West Carrollton 2546-2448. It was one of those “They win the 1st game” and “we win the 2nd game”. They would win the 1st baker we would win the2nd baker. David Sorrell is showing that all of his work over the off season is paying off. He rolled a team high 450 series with a 204-246 = 450. Dan Surfus is continuing to help out by rolling a 208 game as they led the team this night. A 210 baker game helped to ice the win for the Hornets as they evened their record to 2 wins and 2 losses.

11/30/2010 Fairfield Fairfield Lanes

The senior bowlers led the way in the 1st game of the match as Ken Hummons rolled a 207 and Cody Neace rolled a 205. David Sorrell rolled a 256 2nd game as he was the only player to break a 400 series this night with a 435. The Indians were tough as they pounded on us 2934 – 2509 as we couldn’t get our games moving above the 200 level for the baker games. This dropped our record to 1 win and 2 losses.
On our 2nd team Pat McIntosh rolled a new high 142 as a left hander and Cody Myers chipped in a 165 as they fared just as well as the Varsity team.

11/29/2010 Lebanon Eastern Lanes

Not knowing what to expect after the break our guys showed up ready to bowl. Dan Surfus continued to show that he is ready to bowl this year with a 177 – 247 for his 1st ever 400 series of 424. Fellow Sophomore David Sorrell flexed his muscles today as well by rolling his series high 226 – 227 = 453. Freshman Alex Lawson rolled the team’s 1st ever Dutch double 200 game. He finished with a 190 2nd game for a 390 series. Cody Neace rolled a 191 – 210 for another 401 series. The team’s 2nd game was only the 4th time in school history to be over 1000 pins for a game as they rolled a 1052. We were able to hang on in the bakers but we still need a lot of work in this area as Lebanon came back and made up over 100 pins in the 5 games we bowled. Final score was Monroe 2873 – Lebanon 2746 as we scored our 1st win of the season. Record is 1 win and 1 loss.
Cody Timming led the way for Monroe’s 2nd team by bowling a 124 – 129 for a 253 series.

11/22/2010 Franklin Eastern Lanes

Welcome to our 4th Season of bowling here at Monroe High School. This proves to be an interesting year as we are going to carry 17 guys on the team with only 7 returners. We have a big sophomore class with 10 on the team. This should be an exciting year. This should also tell us how good of a team we have since Franklin made it to the state tournament last year. Dan Surfus rolled his 1st ever 200 game and Christian Vollmer followed with a 216 as we opened up with a 906 first game series. The exciting part was that our Baker games went very well. We rolled a 201, 203, 218, and a 192 before falling off with a 142, to lose the match by 20 pins. This should be a fun season as long as we can keep the drama away and the guys focused. Record 0 wins and 1 loss.
Alex Lawson rolled a 183 and Jamie Ridenour rolled a 176 as our team #2 as I will call them lost to Franklin.
